Livelihood Diversification – Overview

Description

The majority of the smallholder farmers in the Northern Region are engaged in crop production, which limits their income source opportunities. We have been working with these farmers to train them in other livelihood opportunities including rice processing, livestock management and soap making.

With support from ActionAid, we have established rice processors cooperative in Bimbila. This cooperative has been supported by a well-equipped center to process quality rice for local consumption with the goal of eventually exporting outside of the district. We have also supported farmers in livestock production and management (specifically with regard to small ruminants and poultry). We’ve given training on disease prevention, processing, and marketing with periodic refresher training. Livestock extension volunteers have also been trained to provide veterinary service to the farmers. For rural women, we have specifically focused on shea butter production and beekeeping to help them diversify income sources and increase their independence.
