SONGTABA LAUNCHED GENDER RIGTHS AND EMPOWERMENT PROJECT (GREP)

On March 10, 2025, Songtaba officially launched the Gender Rights and Empowerment Project (GREP) as part of this year’s #internationalwomensday celebrations. With funding support from the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, this four-year initiative, in partnership with Renel Ghana Foundation, aims to:
• End gender-based violence and harmful cultural practices
• Strengthen legal protections for women and girls
• Provide economic empowerment opportunities
• Advocate for policies such as the Anti-Witchcraft Bill
The launch brought together civil society leaders, legal experts, and both state and non-state actors, all committed to advancing #GenderJustice in Ghana. As Hajia Lamnatu Adam, Executive Director of Songtaba, profoundly stated:
“This project cannot succeed in isolation. We need a multi-sectoral approach to create lasting impact.” With the UN Trust Fund’s support, we are one step closer to ensuring that women and girls live free from violence and #discrimination.
Let’s stand together to amplify women’s voices, protect their rights, and create a future of dignity and #equality.

She Leads Ghana’ Urges President Mahama to Uphold Affirmative Action Law

SHE LEADS -CALL TO UPHOLD THE AFFRIMATIVE ACTION LAW

Click on the link above for the full document

The She Leads Ghana Consortium has called on His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to prioritize the implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act 1121, 2024. The law mandates that at least 30% of decision-making roles in Ghana be held by women, with the ultimate goal of achieving 50% representation by 2034.

The Act, aligned with international frameworks like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Charter for Democracy, Elections, and Governance, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, seeks to enhance women’s participation in public and political life. According to the Consortium, gender inclusivity is critical to achieving sustainable development by 2030.

She Leads Ghana is part of a global initiative spearheaded by Plan International Netherlands, Defence for Children – ECPAT Netherlands, African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET), and Terre des Hommes Netherlands, with Equal Measures 2030 as a technical partner.

In Ghana, the Consortium includes Plan International Ghana, Defence for Children International Ghana, Women Aspire Network, and Hope for Future Generations. Other implementing partners include Rights and Responsibilities Initiatives Ghana, Songtaba, Erudite Women Empowerment Network, and Community Aid for Rural Development.

Petition to Sign Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill into Law (Coalition Against Witchcraft Accusations)

Petition to Sign Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill into Law (Coalition Against Witchcraft Accusations)

CAWA Petition 2024

For too long, citizens, especially older women, have been victimized by witchcraft accusations in
our country. This deep rooted and widespread practice has led to untold suffering, discrimination,
and violence. The practice of witch-hunting and witchcraft accusations is extremely harmful. Just
mere accusations break up families, the foundational unit of society; destroy lives and livelihoods,
and serve as a generational sentence of stigma and suspicion on families. Above all, witch-hunting
is based on a deadly phenomenon as we’ve witnessed the murder, lynching and brutalization of
defenseless victims, mainly older women, on regular basis. While a few of these are reported,
many attacks and murders go unreported, especially in the rural parts of Ghana.
