Justice and Active Citizenship

Justice and Active Citizenship

Empowering informed citizens to shape fair and accountable governance

Active citizenship is foundational for democratic development. When citizens are well-informed, they are more likely to engage in civic responsibilities and demand accountability. Songtaba promotes justice and citizen participation by raising awareness, strengthening community voice, and supporting excluded groups—especially women—who face discrimination in traditional and patriarchal systems.

Women often experience domestic violence, limited access to land and restricted participation in community decision making. Access to information remains a crucial ingredient for justice, as transparency, accessibility and accountability enable citizens to monitor and evaluate public officials.

Key Issues We Address

What Songtaba Does

We create community awareness around justice, gender equality, domestic violence prevention and civic responsibility.

We support women, girls, persons with disabilities and marginalized groups to participate in public decision-making processes.

Underserved groups are supported to engage at community, district and national levels.

We help communities demand transparency and improved performance from local authorities.

Our evidence-based advocacy provides alternatives that inform policy and improve justice systems.

Why This Work Matters

When communities understand their rights and have space to participate, they become more

empowered to advance justice. Transparent governance improves state accountability, reduces abuse,

strengthens democratic values and improves development outcomes.
