Education is a fundamental right and a pathway to breaking the cycle of poverty. Songtaba promotes quality and inclusive education by supporting girls, young mothers and vulnerable learners to stay in school, return to school and access opportunities that improve their lives. Education builds confidence, reduces poverty and strengthens communities. Children of educated women are more likely to be healthy, vaccinated and nourished, demonstrating the wide-reaching impact of education.
Despite national improvements in enrolment, many schools in Northern Ghana continue to experience dropouts, especially after the Covid-19 school closures. Songtaba’s research across 10 districts revealed that 2,765 girls did not return to school due to teenage pregnancy, child marriage and migration for labour.
We raise community awareness on the importance of keeping girls in school and preventing early marriage and teenage pregnancy.
Songtaba supports community structures to encourage school attendance and reduce dropout rates.
We work with schools, parents and local authorities to operationalize the GES Re-entry Policy.
Our research identifies barriers to girls’ education and guides targeted interventions.
We work with underserved groups to provide information, confidence building and pathways to continue their education.
Education is one right that unlocks many others. It improves health, economic opportunity and agency.
Increasing enrolment, strengthening retention and supporting girls who have dropped out contributes
to stronger, more resilient communities.
